Social Determinants of Health Approach:
The social determinants of health (SDH) are factors or conditions that shape the health of individuals
and communities (i.e income and its distribution, education, housing, working conditions, etc). A
social determinants of health approach looks at the role of SDH and how they critically influence
whether individuals stay healthy or become ill and have the resources needed to achieve their full
potential. Here are some Compass Training Centre workshops focusing on social determinants of health:
Growing Health and Well-Being - Allows public health staff to gain an understanding
of all the health supporting systems and barriers to community health.
Growing Understanding and Practice - Examines how public health staff can play a
stronger role in enhancing the health of individuals and communities through work practices.
